Interview With Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz

If interior design was a martial art, Benjamin Noriega Ortiz would be a sensei. A Mr Miyagi in his own right, he’s mastered the delicate balance of creating soothing and seductive atmospheres that are functional yet playful. His bold, dramatic spaces have a whimsical air, with theatrical washes of color and ethereal feathers that tickle the senses. His symphony of colors and textures have enchanted the likes of P. Diddy, Lenny Kravitz, and the luxury boutique hoteliers Morgans Group (Mondrian Hotels), among others. We recently caught up with the design guru himself and asked him a few pivotal questions about sandwiches and four year olds and the likes.
1) What is one essential that you always carry on you?
Other than my iPhone with a camera, a hat!
2) Throughout your career, which project are you most proud of?
My homes have always been sites for experimentation and my design approach always changes right after. I’m also fond of the fabulouse apartment we designed for Lenny Kravitz in New York City and all of the Mondrian Hotels.
3) What is your favorite part of a sandwich?
The Plate
4) Did you ever dream of being anything besides a Designer?
No. NEVER!
5) What advice would you give up-and-coming Designers and Architects?
Your best design tool is your eyes! There is something amazing anywhere. And travel!!
6) Who is your all-time favorite Designer?
My all time favorite artists are Caravaggio and Bernini; Does that count?
7) Has either of your parents influenced your views on design and architecture?
Maybe in an opposite kind of way…
8 ) How would you explain architecture to a 4 year old?
A four year old is a natural architect, no need to explain. We can learn a lot from them.
9) What does wasted time look like to you?
Arguing is a waste of time
10) Who is your personal hero?
If your talking sandwich, a Cuban is personal best.
